It is sometimes known as Travertine Limestone, or Travertine Marble; even though it is neither Limestone nor Marble. It is deposited from the water of mineral springs (especially hot springs). Travertine is often beautifully colored and banded as a result of the presence of iron compounds in the stone. Travertine can be purchased “filled” or “unfilled.” It can be effectively polished to a smooth, shiny finish or honed to produce a more natural sheen.
