Travertine Floors

Travertine is a natural stone made from calcite, or a compressed limestone and steam. Harder compressions of Limestone without steam results in Marble. It is sometimes known as Travertine Limestone, or Travertine Marble; even though it is neither Limestone nor Marble. It is deposited from the water of mineral springs (especially hot springs). Travertine is often beautifully colored and banded as a result of the presence of iron compounds in the stone. Travertine can be purchased “filled” or “unfilled.” It can be effectively polished to a smooth, shiny finish or honed to produce a more natural sheen. Travertine comes in a variety of colors from gray to coral red. With the proper care and maintenance, a Travertine floor will last for decades.
